Outdoor Activities

  • Town Lake—Town Lake is the thing that looks like a river flowing through downtown. Hike and bike trails run along the lake on both sides, making running around the lake a popular Austin tradition. Route maps are also available.
  • Mt. Bonnell—A perennial Austin attraction, Mt. Bonnell is the highest point in the city of Austin. The park offers a nice stair climb to the observation deck, which provides a good view of downtown and the university.
  • Zilker ParkZilker Park is considered Austin's most loved park. More than just an ordinary park, Zilker has something for everyone. You can ride on the Zilker Zephyr miniature train or rent a canoe to paddle down Barton Creek. Zilker also offers Barton Springs Pool, a natural spring-fed pool with a year-round average temperature of 68 degrees (BRR!). The park is home to the Zilker Botanical Gardens. The Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum is on the south end of the park. The Austin Symphony Orchestra will perform its annual concert with fireworks at Zilker. If you'll be in town and would like to join us for a picnic and this concert, let us know.
  • Lake TravisLake Travis is a popular lake for all types of boating. A drive out to Lake Travis is a great way to see a little of the beautiful Texas Hill Country.
  • Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center— The Wildflower Center is located in far South Austin. March tends to be prime wildflower season, so it's likely that you'll miss the most spectacular time; the Wildflower Center is truly amazing when the flowers are in full bloom.
